I declare my final abandonment of livejournal. I will no longer post anything here or come look at anything. Such a sad end.
I think I'll make something better, though.

| a love note |
[Feb. 16th, 2009|12:03 pm] |
I got this email 2 years ago from someone that I do not know at all. Its hilarity has improved with age, so now I share it.
Subject: HELLO to You!
Good morning sugarpuss! Just wanted to say hi and wish you another wonderful day at work. I hope whatever you will be doing is interesting and not mundane. I love you, even though i feel really busy now and a bit stressed, I want you to know that I really do look forward to talking to you. I hope we find ways to make our conversations not like reports on our day, but I think we will be able to. I love you and I wish we could come home from work each day together and cook together but sometimes take turns cooking or being too lazy to cook. oh well, maybe some day! talk to you sooooooon i hope, love, your lizzie tush |

| because you have to |
[Sep. 22nd, 2008|11:02 pm] |
"Why are you writing a novel?", I ask.
"I write because I have to," they both say.
It surprised me that I could relate to this. I realized that, a few times in my life, I have coded because I had to.
My first was my last couple weeks of undergrad, where I wrote a music recommending website instead of my senior project and took a D+ for the first time in my life (not counting the F I got at the same time for a reason nowhere near as interesting). Maybe I should resurrect that project sometime.
Another was my livejournal visualization project. I was in Vienna for a conference, and instead of seeing any of the city, I sat in my hostel and coded for 3 days (being a jerk to my girlfriend at the time in the process). That time paid off, since I met a Google product manager and got to show him my finished project, and I think he was pretty influential in getting me hired.
Now is another time. I am making Treehouse. It's the first project I've done that has felt like a magnum opus. It is going to be interesting.

| browsing is fun again |
[Jul. 27th, 2008|05:53 pm] |
|
As I've started to use tumblr, the most surprising result has been that random browsing of the internets doesn't have the same icky feeling that I'm just wasting time. It feels like a treasure hunt - if I manage to find something I want to share on my tumblr, then I've won! It also makes it less passive, more active. This is a good thing to happen to browsing, and it doesn't happen as strongly with the alternatives to tumblr that I've tried - google reader shared items or delicious (which is still good for personal organization, just not sharing). |

| I <3 SF |
[Jul. 21st, 2008|09:23 am] |
I have recently started renting a room from a friend in San Francisco for the weekends. Not too expensive and I get great exploring time in SF. I'm in the vicinity of 22nd and Guerrero in the Mission, for those curious.
Let me know if you want to go exploring together. |

| hello, flickr! |

I basically gave up on picasa web albums and uploaded most of my photos to flickr last night. Yay flickr! Except for the max 200 photo limit on free accounts. That was lame. |

| video game nostalgia |
[Jun. 11th, 2008|04:16 pm] |
|
I've been recently craving a game like Secret of Mana - an RPG that is fully 2 player (and offline). Marcela and I had so much fun reading Harry Potter together, that I think exploring a fantasy world like this together would be super awesome. As I search online for such a game, I find very little, though - such as this article lamenting the same thing (I, too, bonded with my sister with Secret of Mana).
Anyone have suggestions? |

Some fun for those who want such things. I'm not a big fan myself, but I hear it's all the rage. These particular items needed to be seen by snowmentality who showed up in SF this week, lookin for fun and heart rhythm conferences. I think she found both.
I Love Egg song from iloveegg.com - it has recently been made known to me that there exist people who have not seen this. If we can exterminate small pox as a society, then surely this can reach everyone.
Example of "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job" that I recently fell in like with. Thanks Mathes! |

| ninjaneering is now a competitive field |
[May. 9th, 2008|04:24 pm] |
A few years back, I changed my official job title to be "Software Ninjaneer". I thought that was kinda neat, ya know, cuz ninjas are awesome.
An internal news story popped up today that I am merely one of 14 googlers with "ninja" in their job title, 2 of which are "ninjaneer"s exactly like me.
At least I think I'm still the first of the ninjaneers... but come on!
Maybe I need a new job title... any suggestions? |

| cars |
[Apr. 29th, 2008|11:36 pm] |
As much as I love my 92 Honda Accord, I am getting a bit jealous of the smart cars that are popping up.

I decided I probably want one, maybe later this year, so I just requested a test drive. |

| muitas coisas |
[Apr. 29th, 2008|09:43 pm] |
1) Vista sucks. Don't get it. My fancy new computer was worthless until I went through 2 new network adapters and a new router. It's still not perfect.
2) google maps does directions with public transportation in SF? Hawt.
3) Management is the enemy.
4) I currently own land in Ireland. I inherited it from a cousin and am passing it on to another family member there.
5) I have a life narrative
6) ???
7) Profit!
PS - Does no one else dream about zombocom? Really?
PPS - Does anyone maintain active accounts with Tumblr, Vox, Pownce, or similar services? |

| florida trip |
[Apr. 28th, 2008|11:04 am] |
Last week Marcela and I went to florida. We saw her good friend Scott at his job in Disney World, we got a cool behind-the-scenes tour at SeaWorld that let me pet a penguin (!!!), we saw her cousin and his family, and we saw my uncle and aunt.
